Lindy in Penang
Introduction: What is Lindy Hop?
Lindy Hop, a member of the swing dance family, is an American vernacular jazz dance that was born in Harlem, New York, in the early 20th century. In the course of its development, it has combined multiple African-American dance forms that came before it, with the more structured European style of dancing, thus giving birth to a unique solo/partnered dance genre that enjoyed great popularity in the years between 1920s and 1940s. Accompanied by swing-jazz music, Lindy Hop is both entertaining and mesmerizing to watch as dancers seek to express themselves via fluid and energetic dance moves.
Following decades of obscurity, there was a revival of interest in Lindy Hop in the late 1980s, led by swing dancers from Sweden. Since then, the dance has made a slow but steady return to popular culture and attracted a loyal following from dancers around the world, many of whom are inspired by the sense of esprit de corps in the Lindy Hop community. The Lindy Hop movement has grown considerably in the Southeast Asian region; however, Kuala Lumpur remains as the only Malaysian city to date that has an established presence of this dance form, marked by weekly dancing events (ie, lessons and socials).
